You know I was a guest over at someone’s this weekend and we were talking about various and sundry things, mainly current events and I pointed out a few things I had noticed...
First off, I watch a bunch of different news channels. I don’t think getting your news from a single source is a good thing especially these days. That means in addition to watching the news on the local broadcasts, and also the three news networks (CNN, MSNBC and FOX), I also check out the BBC, the PBS NewsHour, C-Span (WHICH I AM AMAZED MORE PEOPLE DON’T WATCH) and even NHK World but I think CNBC does probably the best job of all because it focuses on how the news impacts business and the world and it doesn’t dress anything up.
Now, you might think all the news in the world is only about the President and the Election but that’s just not the case.
At this very moment none of the news channels here in the US appear to think much of two nuclear powers facing off in an escalating situation that has not gotten a lick of coverage here in the US. Think about that one for a second if you will, you THE AMERICAN VIEWER aren’t even worried about it!
Oh sure there are lots of things the news currently has you terrorized and hyperventilating over but those things are closer to home and maybe even they can work it in such a way that specific parties can be blamed and they can build upon that narrative but the prospect of actual nuclear war?
Not such a big deal.
Think I’m joking? Guess again. This past week India moved troops to the high ground in a border dispute with China that has already seen a number of Indian Troops killed by Chinese forces and doesn’t seem to have a solution in the offing.
When I started this... the point I was trying to make is how what we watch and what we read is very important in shaping our worldview.
I’m a total weirdo. Seriously, there have been times recently where I have sat down to have dinner and turned on C-Span to hear arguments being made before the Supreme Court. As I write this, I just finished watching Cardinal Dolan and a Rabbi in discussion at the 92nd St Y.
I don’t watch primetime TV but I will watch all kinds of things on the Science channel, Nat Geo channel, Discovery and History.
Oh, and I’ll admit my guilty pleasure is the People’s Court, Judge Judy, Caught in Providence and Parking Wars.
So, what I had started to speak to was the fact that two nuclear powers were in the middle of a showdown and apparently NO ONE on any of the news networks in this country felt it was important enough to give time to the story.
India and China have been facing off and that’s BIG NEWS.
If you’re asleep maybe you aren’t recognizing what has been going on with China lately...
They’ve been facing off against the Indians, are in the middle of a somewhat big spat with the Australians, are trying to keep Taiwan from pushing it’s own independence and identity, pushing illegal claims on the South China Sea and fighting a bit with the Canadians.
Never mind what’s been going on with the Chinese and our own country. The thing you should be worried about is what the new Administration will be doing in regards to China because when you look at what the Chinese themselves are saying it should worry any American ENORMOUSLY!
